In the past it was known as the Aldea Ajey and was situated on the sides of Montaña Mina where the native people used to live.
San Bartolomé can be found almost exactly in the middle of the island with the sea to the south, Arrecife to the east and Teguise and Tinajo to the north. TÃas borders Guacimeta where Lanzarote airport is located.
The history of the municipalith is strongly linked to El Jable(sand) and the farming of batata or sweet potato from where the nickname for the people of San Bartolomé comes from, batateros.
Traditionally agriculture was the main economic activity. The earth in the Jable area not only produces sweet potatoes, onions and vegetables but also vineyards which have given this privileged area great importance on the island.
The parish church contains sculptures which are of great interest such as San Amaro. There are several houses which are of cultural interest such as Casa Mayor Guerra, the traditional Casa Ajey which dates back to the 18th century and Casa Cerdeña where San Bartolomé Tourist office can be found. The town hall is another place of interest to the tourist in the municipality.
The Tanit Museum, a private concern, reveals the history and culture of the people of Lanzarote. This ethnographic museum contains all kinds of farming implements and tools used daily at that time.
The Monumento al Campasino, which can be found in the center of the island in the village of Mozaga, is a traditonal museum designed by the local artist César Manrique and is a must for every tourist as it pays hommage to the farmers of Lanzarote.
